A professor of English at Wellesley College, Berkman was a writer of short stories and the author of Katherine Mansfield: A Critical Study (1951). She was also a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute (1964-1965) and a member of the Corporation of Yaddo (1966-?) Her sister Tessie was a professor of social work and her mother Gertrude was a writer.
